If you’re ever in the San Antonio/Austin area of Texas, take a little time out to visit the town of Gruene. Now part of the town of New Braunfels, Gruene was founded in the last quarter of the 19th century along the banks of the Guadalupe River by H.D. Gruene. For nearly 50 years the town thrived as cotton was at the core of the economy and there was a large cotton gin in use. In 1922 the cotton gin burned, followed soon after by the stock market collapse in 1929, resulting in the near destruction of the town.
For 40+ years the town sat quietly, fading into history until 1974 when a UT student kayaking on the Guadalupe River happened to catch site of the old water tower at the top of the hill and decided to investigate. Eventually, his efforts resulted in the area being added to the National Register of Historic Places. Visiting the town of Gruene is a pure Texas experience and a must for anyone wanting to see true history in the heart of Texas.
